JTV usernames are now yours for the taking

We’re publicly releasing the nearly 30 million inactive usernames that were used on Twitch’s predecessor, Justin.tv.

These highly coveted names have been unavailable since we retired the Justin.tv brand a few years ago, but we’re excited to finally make them available again. You’re welcome, xXNewbLord07Xx.

To commemorate this, we’re resetting the 60-day rename cooldown on all accounts that have changed their names already. Simply go to your Profile Settings. Beside your username you’ll see text indicating that you’re eligible to make a name change.

Once you’ve changed your name, the abandoned username will be held by Twitch for a minimum of six months. We may decide to return it to the pool of available usernames for the community and new users. We will not recycle Partner usernames, except in special circumstances.

We often receive requests for taken but inactive usernames. Unfortunately, at this time, we still do not accept direct requests to take a name from another existing account. Inactive usernames are subject to our username recycle and reuse policy. Please see this blog for more information on how that works.

Please note, streamers, that you will lose access to your dashboard stats if you change your username. To preserve your streamer stats, you must export them prior to changing your username. It should also be noted that the URL for your channel page will change and the old one will not redirect to your new one, so be sure to update the link wherever you are using it externally.

There is a lot to consider when changing your username, but we hope you’ll get some good use out of this tool.

*Important clarification to Affiliates only: An earlier email stated that affiliate usernames will not be recycled. We want to clarify that if you change your username, your old username may be recycled after 6 months.
